Ana Bastos Carvalho M.D. 
Executive Board Member

Ana Bastos de Carvalho is Assistant Professor at the Dept. of Ophthalmology & Visual Sciences, University of Kentucky. She is founder and co-director of the University of Kentucky Global Ophthalmology (UK GO) program, whose mission is to prevent blindness by delivering state-of-the-art eye care to underserved populations.

 

Having lived on 4 continents, she has seen severe inequalities in healthcare access and delivery firsthand. Ana works towards eradicating such disparities through research, education, capacity building, and clinical work.

 

In the area of education and capacity building, she serves as residency program co-director at the Ophthalmology department, Hopital de l’Universite d’Etat d’Haiti, Port-au-Prince, Haiti.

 

In the area of research, she directs the Implementation science lab at the Ophthalmology department, University of Kentucky, and her work focuses on access to screening for diabetic eye disease for underserved populations.

 

She graduated from medical school and completed her ophthalmology residency in Portugal, and conducted her post-doctoral research work, as well as her medical retina fellowship, at the University of Kentucky.
